What ‘s IGBT
IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) is a composite fully controllable power semiconductor device consisting of BJT (Bipolar Junction Transistor) and MOS (Metal Oxide Semiconductor) components. It combines the high input impedance of Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor (MOSFET) and the low conduction voltage drop of Giant Transistor (GTR).
IGBT is often presented in module form, composed of IGBT chips and Freewheeling Diode (FWD) chips connected through customized circuitry. These components are encapsulated within a module package that includes a frame, substrate and other elements, resulting in a modularized product.
What's the applications?
IGBT modules serve as core devices in energy conversion and transmission, finding widespread applications across various fields, including e-mobility, consumer electronics, renewable energy generation, industrial control, smart grids and rail transportation, etc.
For Automotive
For instance, in the motor controller of EV, IGBT modules act as the central components of inverters. They convert high-voltage direct current into alternating current to drive the vehicle's motor, constituting over 5% of the total vehicle cost. The failure of an IGBT power module can lead to an immediate loss of vehicle power, significantly impacting user experience and driving safety. As a result, automotive manufacturers demand high environmental reliability from IGBT modules, aiming for their longevity throughout the entire hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) lifecycle.
For Renewable Energy
In the realm of renewable energy generation, IGBT modules are crucial components in inverters for photovoltaic and wind power systems. They are primarily used in DC/DC boost and DC/AC inverter circuits, constituting over 10% of the inverter cost.IGBT module failures can result in system downtime, causing substantial losses in electricity generation. One significant cause of failure is the generation of substantial heat during prolonged continuous operation, exceeding the rated operating temperature of the components, thus affecting functionality and lifespan. Therefore, effective thermal management is crucial for the reliable operation of IGBT modules.
